Part 2: Why You Should Write Down A 100-Goals List by Sofia Widengren

My name is Sofia Widengren and I recently wrote an article about goal-setting. Today I want to follow up on that article and talk about one of my favorite exercises - setting 100 goals in life! 

So what is a 100 Goals-List? It is a list of 100 things that you want to do and experience during your lifetime. There are a few "rules" when it comes to creating this list: 

  1. Everything can be included (Big visions, material things, feelings etc.) 

  2. Revised on an ongoing basis (e.g. annually) 

  3. It is not a checklist to be stressed through

  4. Everything should be formulated as if it has already happened! For example, if you want one million SEK in the bank account, write "I have one million SEK in my bank account" instead of "I would like SEK one million in my bank account". There are many studies that show that if it is written in the past tense instead of futurum it helps to subconsciously manifest the goal.

To share some ideas, here are nine goals I wrote on my first 100 goals-list. I always write them by hand but since they are in Swedish I have translated them (and included a picture of my first actual list):

80. Have a well-equipped home gym

81. Have bought Pontus (my fiancé) his dream watch 

82. Have done a TED talk 

83. Have had a lecture for a company 

84. I am an expert within one of my passion areas

85. I am a mentor to someone 

86. Have shopped with a personal shopper 

87. Have a “Säker Stil” wardrobe (referring to a concept in a book)

88. Have done paragliding in a beautiful environment

One of the funniest things I have heard to be included in the list is "Join the Mile High Club" (if you know, you know!) but I have also heard goals like "I can sing", "I am pain free", “I have taken my mom to the Maldives” and "I have an apartment in Spain". In other words, there are no limits to what can be included on your list. When you (perhaps annually) revise the list you can move what has happened to a list of great memories and fill the blanks with new dreams.

Tips to get started with the 100-goals list:

  1. Set aside time! Put away distractions such as your phone and let yourself really consider what you want to do with your life. What do you want to experience? What do you want to contribute with? 

  2. Write down your goals by hand - you will remember them better in this way.  

  3. Use your 100-goals List as inspiration when you set your goals and return to it when you want a little extra motivation in your everyday life.
